A Homemade Dog Birthday Cake!

Dukey's birthday was May 1st. ( I know. It was a long time ago!)  So I decided to make him a cake.  I got on the Internet and searched for a recipe for a dog cake... and this is what I found! I changed the recipe a bit though. Dukey and his two doggie friends who came over LOVED it!

You will need:
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 T. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup corn oil
  • 3 jars strained chicken baby food
  • 2 cups finely shredded carrots
  • plain or vanilla yogurt
  •
  • Something such as dog treats or bacon bits to use as sprinkles (optional)
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Generously grease and flour two 8" round cake pans; set aside. Or if you have only one, like me, just use one.

Ta da! :)

Combine flour and baking powder; set aside.

In a mixing bowl, beat softened margarine until smooth.

Add eggs and corn oil; mix well.
Add two jars of strained chicken, and shredded carrots and mix until smooth.

Add flour mixture and mix thoroughly
Let your dog have a taste...
Yum!
Pour batter into the two prepared 8" cake pans. Bake at 325° for 60 minutes. If you're only using one cake pan, pour half of the batter into it and save the rest in the fridge.
It should look something like this.
Let cool for a few minutes before removing from pans. Cool completely on wire racks.
Once you have the first part of the cake done, (if you are using one cake pan) wash he pan and grease and flour it again. Now you can take the rest of the batter out of the fridge and pour it into the pan...
... and give your (hopefully) patiently waiting dog a taste. (:
When both layers are done, you can start on the filling. Mix the last jar of baby food with some yogurt and spread it on the first layer of the cake.

And, of course, let your dog lick the bowl.
Put the second layer on top and spread yogurt over the top and sides.
Okay, so it's a bit messy... I don't think Dukey will mind though...Yogurt is hard to ice a cake with!
If you don't want to do the taste testing, just find someone else... I had three voulenteers. Who? Dukey,Renee, and Sebastian! Yep, they really did! Sebastian even had a slice!

If you want, now put some "sprinkles" on your cake. (I used some dog treats.)
Well, that is my homemade dog birthday cake! You mught want to make the cake a bit smaller though! Also, you might want to cut the cake into bite-sized peices... just incase your dog tries to eat it too fast and almost chokes on it... which is what Dukey almost did.
This is the leftover cake. The peice that's missing fed three dogs and one person. If you are feeding less than about fifteen dogs, I would suggest making a smaller version of this cake. At least I know that for next time.
